So you've made a wiki ...
And used it throughout the year ...
But a new school year is coming ...
NOW WHAT???
Well, I'm not sure I can answer that question easily. However, what I've done below is outlined the steps I'm taking to prepare my old student-use wiki for a new school year. Hopefully it will give you some ideas of how to revamp your wiki, although it's true enough that wikis are easy to start from scratch.
I have "deleted" whole wikis ... or, hidden old pages and made new pages. But this year, I'm trying to keep a lot of things that are constants, while figuring out what to do with my old students' work. Some pages of this I will use for examples, some I want my former students to have access to - some, I am sure, will be deleted by their owners.
On the table below, I'll keep track of the steps I take as I renew my wiki for the next school year.
| Step 1 |
Review the wiki pages; remove Google widgits and other app's that are no longer working. Add new app's where appropriate. |
| Step 2 |
Move pages into folders to make former students able to access their work only within their year folder.
Delete empty folders. Migrate task pages or copy onto new pages as needed.
Create new folders as needed.
Change users to "reader" on wiki-wide access. Set users to "writer" on folder access.
Delete redundant users.
|
| Step 3 |
Play around with color scheme, logo and general layout. |
| Step 4 |
Added in new sidebar items for new projects; removed links to old projects. |
| Step 5 |
Set up new students' access.
First: all students have "reader" access as default to site.
Second: all students have "reader" access to their OWN class folder.
Third: all students have "writer" access to their own pages, but not on other students' pages. This way they can comment, but not monk around with someone else's stuff.
Fourth: revised access for old students.
|
| Step 6 |
updated some of my projects pages to use again.
deleted old students' pages, except ones for exemplars. Apparently, pbworks now has space limitations for wikis, as well as user limitations. Sad, very sad.
